Whether you need to stop your vehicle when you see a police car depends on several factors [1]. Generally, simply seeing a police car on the road does not require you to stop, but you must stop if:
-
You are being pulled over: This is indicated by the officer activating the police car’s flashing lights (blue and/or red) and/or siren [1]. In this situation, you must pull over safely and as soon as possible.
-
The officer signals you to stop: An officer might use hand signals, a “STOP” sign on the back of the patrol car, or a loudspeaker command for you to pull over [1].
-
You are approaching a stopped emergency vehicle: Most states have “Move Over” laws that require drivers to move over a lane or slow down significantly when approaching a stationary police car (or other emergency vehicle) with its lights activated [1].
In all other circumstances, you should continue driving normally while adhering to all traffic laws.
