Suwanee Named ‘Top Ten’ Spot To Live

POSTED: 6:22 am EDT July 17, 2007

SUWANEE, Ga. – This small town in the shadow of Atlanta has its own reason to boast.

Money magazine announced Monday that Suwanee in Gwinnett County is the one of the ten “Best Places to Live” in America for 2007, citing its green spaces and affordable housing.

Middleton, Wisconsin captured the top spot.

“Those places tend to do well on these kind of lists,” said Money executive editor Craig Matters.

Money’s focus this year in its annual best places to live issue looked at 2,876 places with populations between 7,500 and 50,000. Middleton was followed by Hanover, N.H., Louisville, Colo., Lake Mary, Fla., Claremont, Calif., Papillion, Neb., Milton, Mass., Chaska, Minn., Nether Providence, Pa., and Suwanee.

The only other Georgia city making the list was Peachtree City, coming in at number 61.

The rankings were based on a series of factors including economic vitality, job availability, safety, residents’ health, ethnic and racial diversity, cultural amenities, green space and other economic and quality of life measures.

The only negative mentioned for Suwanee was the traffic on I-85.

The “best places to live” feature has appeared in Money since 1987. Last year the list focused on communities with fewer than 300,000 residents that are not dependent on metropolitan areas and the year before that it looked at prime suburban areas.

The top spot last year was captured by Fort Collins, Colo.

Atlanta commute a hazard to health
Metro commute listed as 2nd worst in nation in report that considers pollution, crash deaths and travel delays.

By Ariel Hart
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Published on: 07/25/07

Only one big metro area in America has a less healthy commute than metro Atlanta, according to a report by Forbes.com this week.

The report gives equal weight to air pollution, length of peak-hour travel delays and fatal crashes. Atlanta doesn’t get top —- or, should we say, bottom —- marks on those individually, but put them all together and the area is the second worst in the country, according to Forbes’ analysis. The Riverside, Calif., area tops the list.

Riverside has the highest rate of fatal crashes, according to the report. Rush-hour drivers in the Los Angeles area had the longest delay from congestion, according to the Texas Transportation Institute, with Atlanta coming in fourth, at 67 annual hours of delay.

The Atlanta metro area ranks 13th in the nation for particle pollution, according to the American Lung Association. It has improved in recent years, partly due to cooler and rainier weather.

“This is clearly another list we don’t want to be on as a region,” said Kevin Green, executive director of Atlanta’s Clean Air Campaign, which tries to persuade businesses and their employees to adopt cleaner commute strategies like teleworking. The group says it’s drawing converts by leaps and bounds, with 4,280 teleworkers in its program now, up from 3,000 last October.

The state Department of Transportation values teleworking, van pooling and transit, but big road projects like the ones it’s planning on metro interstates matter too, a spokesman said.

“All those things are important; they’re critical,” said DOT spokesman David Spear. “But we also have to recognize that, however successful we are going to be at getting people out of their solo cars, there’s going to be a significant component of people who choose to drive or are passing through, and we have to provide them mobility too.”

Bob Dallas, head of the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety, said there are two things individual drivers can do immediately to reduce congestion, air pollution and crash deaths. Wearing seat belts and driving the speed limit, he said, will reduce the number and severity of crashes. That means fewer deaths and less congestion as drivers wait for police to clear crashes off the roads.

“Approximately half our congestion is due to incidents,” Dallas said. “My advice to the public is clear: Wear your safety belt and drive close to that speed limit.”

Police have not released the name of the victim.

Mar-Ina,

[2022 Oregon Schools | Public, Charter, & Private School Ratings]

Georgia schools tops on U.S. News & World Report list
Atlanta Business Chronicle - August 17, 2007

Four Georgia universities had good showings on the 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Colleges” guide, which hits newsstands on Aug. 27.

Georgia Tech is ranked seventh among the nation’s public universities for undergraduates – the highest ranking in the Institute’s history – and is among the top 10 public universities for the ninth consecutive year. Georgia Tech moved up to the seventh spot from eighth last year among public universities and moved up two spots to 35th among all national universities.

Georgia Tech’s College of Engineering, which is the nation’s largest, moved up in the rankings to fifth from sixth last year. The College of Engineering had four of its programs ranked in the top five among specialty areas. Industrial Engineering ranked first, Aerospace ranked second, Biomedical placed third (up from fourth last year) and Civil Engineering ranked fifth.

“Georgia Tech continues to distinguish itself as one of the top national universities over the last decade,” said Wayne Clough, Georgia Tech president. “This recognition reflects the high quality of our programs, faculty and students, and our growing momentum.”

The University of Georgia is tied for 20th among public universities and tied for 59th out of 124 institutions overall. And the undergraduate program at UGA’s Terry College of Business was ranked 27th overall and 17th among public business schools.

UGA’s rankings mark the ninth consecutive year the university has been ranked 22nd or higher among the leading public universities in the nation.

“It is very gratifying for the hard work of the students, faculty and staff to be recognized with a top-20 ranking in U.S. News & World report,” said Michael F. Adams, UGA president. “Such recognition is the result of consistently doing things right. As the flagship university of the state, UGA has an obligation to serve Georgia’s people with the highest level of quality. This ranking is an indication that UGA is doing just that.”

Emory University placed 17th among 248 national universities. Emory’s Goizueta Business School was 12th in the rankings of undergraduate business programs.

“Rankings tell one story about the success of an institution in fulfilling its goals and objectives,” said Earl Lewis, Emory provost. “The work and accomplishments of its students, faculty and staff are the true measure, however. Emory is committed to investing strategic resources that enable our faculty and students to make a significant impact in the Atlanta community, in higher education and in the world. We look forward to continuing to meet that challenge.”

The undergraduate program at Georgia State University’s J. Mack Robinson College of Business is ranked among the nation’s top 50 business school programs according to the 2008 edition of U.S. News & World Report’s “America’s Best Colleges” guide. This is the sixth consecutive year that the college has ranked in the top 50.

Three of the college’s departments – Risk Management and Insurance, Computer Information Systems, and Real Estate – also ranked among the top 10 in their respective categories.

“The fact that the Robinson College has once again been recognized among the top undergraduate business programs in the nation is a testament to the quality of our students, faculty and staff,” said H. Fenwick Huss, dean of the Robinson College of Business. “The college’s top marks in three specialty areas further illustrate our strengths, and these rankings place us among an elite group of business schools nationwide.”

This is for anyone who lives in Atlanta, has ever lived in Atlanta, has ever visited Atlanta, ever plans to visit Atlanta, knows anyone who already lives in Atlanta, or knows anyone who has ever heard of Atlanta …

Atlanta is composed mostly of one-way streets. The only way to get out Of downtown Atlanta is to turnaround and start over when you reach Greenville, South Carolina .

All directions start with, “Go down Peachtree” and include the phrase, “When you see the Waffle House.” Except in Cobb County, where all directions begin with, “From the Big Chicken.”

Peachtree Street has no beginning and no end and is not to be confused with: Peachtree Circle Peachtree Place Peachtree Lane Peachtree Road Peachtree Parkway Peachtree Run Peachtree Terrace Peachtree Avenue Peachtree Commons Peachtree Battle Peachtree Corners New Peachtree Old Peachtree West Peachtree Peachtree-Dunwoody Peachtree-Chamblee Peachtree Industrial Boulevard

Atlantans only know their way to work and their way home. If you ask anyone for directions, they will always send you down Peachtree. And yes, they have a street named simply, “Boulevard.”

Only a native can pronounce Ponce De Leon Avenue, so do not attempt the Spanish pronunciation. People will simply tilt their heads to the right and stare at you. The Atlanta pronunciation is " pawntz duh LEE-awn."

Atlanta is the home of Coca-Cola. Coke’s all they drink there so don’t ask for any other soft drink unless it’s made by Coca-Cola. Even if you want something other than a Coca-Cola, it’s still called Coke.

The gates at Atlanta’s Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport are about 32 miles away from the Main Concourse, so wear sneakers and pack a lunch.

The 8 a.m. rush hour is from 6:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. The 5 p.m. rush hour is from 3:00 p.m. to 7:30 pm. Friday’s rush hour starts Thursday afternoon and lasts through 2 a.m. Saturday.

The falling of one raindrop causes all drivers to immediately forget all traffic rules.

If a single snowflake falls, the city is paralyzed for three days and it’s on all the channels as a news flash every 15 minutes for a week. Overnight, all grocery stores will be sold out of milk , bread, bottled water, toilet paper, and beer.

I-285, the loop that encircles Atlanta , which has a posted speed limit of 55 mph (but you have to maintain 80 mph just to keep from getting run over), is known to truckers as “The Watermelon 500.”

Don’t believe the directional markers on highways: I-285 is marked “East” and “West” but you may be going North or South. The locals identify the direction by referring to the “Inner Loop” and the “Outer Loop.” If you travel on Hwy 92 North, you will actually be going southeast.

Never buy a ladder or mattress in Atlanta. Just go to one of the interstates and you will soon find one in the middle of the road.

The last thing you want to do is give another driver the finger, unless your car is armored, your trigger finger is itchy and your AK-47 has a full clip.

Possums sleep in the middle of the road with their feet in the air.

There are 5,000 types of snakes and 4,998 live in Georgia .

There are 10,000 types of spiders. All 10,000 live in Georgia , plus a couple no one has seen before.

If it grows, it sticks. If it crawls, it bites. If you notice a vine trying to wrap itself around your leg, you have about 20 seconds to escape, before you are completely captured and covered with Kudzu, and never heard from again.

It’s not a shopping cart, it’s a buggy. “Fixinto” is one word (I’m fixinto go to the store).

Sweet Tea is appropriate for all meals (even breakfast) and you start drinking it when you’re 2 years old.

“Jeet?” is actually a phrase meaning “Did you eat?”

“Momma-nem” means: “How is your Mother and all of the other children and other members of the family doing?”

If you understand these jokes, forward them to your friends from Atlanta, and those who just wish they were.
